When Scace turned 100, she was living with her stepdaughter. She enjoyed meeting up with friends and getting her hair done, even though her vision reportedly worsened due to old age. Despite her age, Scace still took pride in her appearance and made an effort to dress stylishly. Her family knew her to be a friendly and outgoing person.

In 1964, Scace moved into a nursing home in Pittsfield. When she turned 104, she enjoyed watching TV and birdwatching. On her 110th birthday, she was mostly bedridden but would get up with help every few days. She could still recite poetry she had learned as a child. Despite her age, she was healthy, took no medication, and had a good appetite. In August 1974, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first supercentenarian to reside in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.

Nellie Scace died in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA, on 5 December 1974, at the age of 110 years, 105 days. She is believed to be the first supercentenarian to have passed away in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.
