BIOGRAPHY

Teru Ōshiro was born in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on 10 May 1904. She had one son and three daughters. After World War II, she ran a farm and oil business with her husband. Before and after Okinawa was returned to Japan, she was raising pigs and poultry in Haebaru and Naha.

In her late life, she grew carrots and bitter melons in her home garden and enjoyed sharing them with her children and grandchildren.

Teru Ōshiro passed away at a hospital in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on 26 January 2018, at the age of 113 years, 261 days.

RECOGNITION

Since 2012, she was reported annually in Okinawa Prefecture’s list of the oldest living residents. In 2015, she was not reported due to a clerical error by Naha City.

On 28 February 2016, following the death of 114-year-old Toshie Yorimitsu, she became the oldest living person in Okinawa Prefecture.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 21 May 2023.
