Biography

Sakae Shimizu was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan on 22 March 1909 as the third daughter of five siblings. She entered an ordinary elementary school in 1915. After graduating from a higher elementary school, she worked in the textile manufacturing industry and then as an operator in Hamamatsu’s newly established telephone office.

In 1932, she married Harumoto Shimizu and eventually had 5 daughters. The couple ran a circular saw factory in Hamamatsu. In 1977, after her husband passed away, she continued to work in the factory until she was almost 100 years old. When she was 101, she had a surgery to have gallstones removed.

Sakae Shimizu passed away in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on 27 June 2021, at the age of 112 years, 97 days.

Recognition

Sakae Shimizu became the oldest living person in Hamamatsu City, following the death of 112-year-old Hatsue Tachikawa on 22 December 2019. At the time of her passing, she was the second-oldest living person in Shizuoka Prefecture (after Kahoru Furuya), and the last person born in the Meiji in Hamamatsu City.

Her age was verified by Japan’s MHLW, Yu Li, Bogdan Solyanikov and Ryohei Asano, and validated by LongeviQuest on 14 March 2023.
