Biography
Mollie Walker was born in Pencoedtre, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom, on 5 February 1909. In 1923, her father left the forces and the family settled in Peppard. On her 17th birthday, she got her first car; a brand-new Austin 7.
In 1931, she married John Walker. The next year, they moved to Rotherfield Peppard, Oxfordshire. They had two children; daughter, Sheila, and son, Graham.
During World War II, Walker volunteered for the WVS (Women’s Voluntary Service) later to become the WRVS and helped at the American Army Hospital on Kingwood Common where wounded German prisoners of war were cared for. From 1954 to 1979, she worked for Peppard Parish Council. She was later awarded an Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her work in the Civil Defence.
Her husband passed away in 1991. She gave up driving at the age of 103.
Walker passed away at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, Berkshire on 22 January 2022 at the age of 112 years, 351 days.
