Issaku Tomoe

Issaku Tomoe (Japanese: 巴一作) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age has been validated by LongeviQuest. At the time of death, he was the oldest living man in Japan.

Biography

Issaku Tomoe was born in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on 15 August 1909. He aspired to become a physician, and Nagoya Medical College awarded him the title of Doctor of Medicine for his thesis entitled ”Pernicious Anemia in Japan” in 1939.

In 1968, he was appointed as the director of the Municipal Okazaki Hospital. He remained an active physician well past his 90th birthday. Tomoe had two daughters. He was driving until he was 99.

At some point, he moved into the nursing home in Okazaki. At the age of 110, he was wheelchair-bound, but still enjoyed watching television and reading newspapers. He had five grandchildren.

Issaku Tomoe passed away in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on 14 April 2020.

Recognition

In September 2018, at the age of 109, he was reported as the oldest living man in Aichi Prefecture. His name was not publicly revealed at the time.

On 12 February 2020, following the death of 112-year-old Jo Makihara of Gamagori, he became the oldest living resident of Aichi Prefecture, at the age of 110.

On 23 February 2020, following the death of 112-year-old Chitetsu Watanabe of Niigata Prefecture, he became the oldest living man in Japan.

Tomoe was succeeded by Shōjirō Shirai as the oldest living man in Japan.

His age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano and Yu Li, and validated by LongeviQuest on 14 May 2023.
