BIOGRAPHY

Ito was born in Japan on either 3 August or 16 September 1856. Her eyesight began to deteriorate from the age of 100, and she was bedridden from 1959 until her death.

At the age of 108, Ito had three living daughters, 23 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Ito died in Iwade, in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture, on 26 November 1966 at the age of 110 years, 71 or 115 days.

RECOGNITION

Following the death of 109-year-old Ishi Hayashi on 21 May 1964, Ito became Japan’s oldest resident. She was succeeded after her own death by Tome Horigome (1857 – 1968).

Ito’s birth date was originally validated as 3 August 1856. However, subsequent research has shown that her actual birth date is likely to be 16 September 1856; this has not officially been confirmed by LongeviQuest.
