Yasutaro Koide was born in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, on 13 March 1903, where he worked as a tailor for a men’s clothes shop. He had seven children.
At the age of 107, he moved to the city of Nagoya to live with his daughter.
Koide died of heart failure and pneumonia in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, at 0:17 AM on 19 January 2016, at the age of 112 years, 312 days.
On 9 February 2013, following the death of 111-year-old Tsuya Miura, he became the oldest living person in Aichi Prefecture, a month before turning 110.
On 5 July 2015, following the death of 112-year-old Sakari Momoi of Saitama, Japan, he became the world’s oldest living man. His record was recognized by Guinness World Records in August 2015, when he was visited by Erika Ogawa, GWR’s Vice President Japan, who presented him with a certificate of his record title.
