BIOGRAPHY

Conn was born in Wishek, North Dakota, USA, on 22 June 1911. She was the second of four children born to Lloyd Archie Houstman (1884–1967) and Mathilda “Tillie” Schaefer (1886–1971). Her three siblings were: Dareld Edward Houstman (1909–2008), Ann Lillian Janke (1913–1982), and Lloyd Elsworth Houstman (1915–2014). After graduating from Turtle Lake High School in 1929, she worked at Kusler’s Department Store before relocating to Wilmore, Kentucky, in 1935.

On 10 July 1937, she married Arthur “Art” Conn (1912–2009) in Turtle Lake, and they shared nearly 72 years of marriage until his passing in March 2009. Though they had no children, the couple enjoyed extensive travel, visiting destinations such as Hawaii, Israel, Australia, and New Zealand. Her husband retired in 1979 after 26 years with the U.S. Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville, Kentucky. During their time in Milwaukee, he was active in the steelworkers union, while she worked as a saleswoman. In 1994, they relocated to Florida. Her love for music was evident in her regular piano playing and singing at church and community events. She also had a passion for gardening, helping her husband cultivate 40 different varieties of roses.

A devoted Christian, she was an active member of Faith Baptist Church in New Port Richey, Florida. During the last eight years of her life, she lived with the Csarni family, who became her caregivers and close companions.

Violet Conn passed away at the Marliere Hospice House in New Port Richey, Florida, USA, on 16 January 2022, at the age of 110 years, 208 days.
