BIOGRAPHY

Vera Dorch was born in Washington County, North Carolina, USA, on 20 May 1909. She had been a resident of Mount Vernon, New York, since her family moved there around 1922. Both she and her brother, Clarence, spent their adult lives in Mount Vernon, where they became prominent members of the community. She graduated from A.B. Davis High School and Elizabeth City Teachers College in North Carolina.

In 1927, she joined Macedonia Baptist Church, where she remained an active and lifelong member. It was at this church that she met her future husband, Sherefield Dorch. The couple married in 1938 and, though they had no children, enjoyed a marriage that lasted 52 years. She continued voting in elections until 2008.

Vera Dorch passed away in Mount Vernon, on 22 October 2019, at the age of 110 years, 155 days.
