BIOGRAPHY
Tsuyako Satō was born in Kaigaya Village (now Maebashi City), Gunma Prefecture, Japan, on 9 April 1914. In 1935, she moved to Saitama City and, together with her husband, ran an electrical appliance store in Shimomachi, Omiya Ward, Saitama City. During World War II, her husband was sent to the front, and she evacuated to her hometown in Gunma with their five children. Eventually, they had seven children, and she attributes her long and healthy life to her devoted and caring children.
Around the age of 80, she took up poetry recitation as a hobby and began performing at local events and senior citizens’ gatherings. Both she and her family believe that this hobby of reciting poetry aloud has been one of the keys to her longevity. After turning 105, she broke her leg and was hospitalized, but through rehabilitation, she regained her ability to walk.
On 13 September 2024, the mayors of Saitama City and Omiya Ward visited her home to celebrate her status as the oldest person in Omiya Ward and her remarkable longevity. The mayor remarked, “Congratulations! Speaking with you today, I can see how healthy you are, and I feel energized and uplifted. Just talking with you brings me joy. Thank you.” Satō expressed her gratitude, saying, “Everyone is kind to me every day, which helps me stay healthy. To receive congratulations from the mayor is such an honor—I couldn’t be happier. This recognition gives me strength and motivates me to stay healthy. I will continue to do my best.”
Tsuyako Satō was last confirmed alive on 1 April 2025, at 110. She was a resident of Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture.
