BIOGRAPHY
Tō Tajiri was born in Japan on 23 October 1901.
On 2 September 2010, ahead of Respect for the Aged Day, Mayor Tsutomu Okumoto visited the special nursing home where she resided and presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a silk blanket. At the time, she was the oldest resident in the city. It was also reported that she enjoyed composing haiku and tanka poetry and had compiled a small booklet of her poems after moving into the nursing home. Delighted by the mayor’s visit, she showed him her handwritten collection of poems and shared stories about her family.
During the mayor’s visit in September 2011, it was reported that she remained such an avid sushi lover that she kept a sign in her room reading, “Sushi is everything now.” She was also an accomplished haiku poet and was said to compose poems spontaneously whenever she was inspired.
Tō Tajiri passed away in Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, in February 2014, at the age of 112 years, 101-128 days.
