Teresa Velázquez Andrés was born in Segorbe, Valencia, Spain, on 13 July 1909. Allegedly, her great-uncle was Julio Cervera Baviera, a Spanish engineer who was an early pioneer in the development of radio and authored various scientific and geographic books and articles. Her father, Manuel Velázquez Cervera, served as the Republican mayor of Segorbe from 1931 to 1934, and her brother, Rafael Velázquez, was a well-known doctor.
The Segorbe City Council honored Teresa on the occasion of her centenary, presenting her with the city’s silver insignia and a commemorative plaque in celebration of her milestone birthday. At 107, she remained in good health and was still fully lucid, walking through the city every day.
