BIOGRAPHY

Sumi Fujiki was born in Japan on 10 September 1892. At some point, she got married and had children. During her life, she was engaging in farming work at her home in Ono City, Hyōgo Prefecture. Until the age of 100, Fujiki regularly babysat for her grandchildren.

At the age of 111, she still resided at her home. She maintained a hearty appetite, consuming three square meals a day, and was still capable of getting up from the futon unassisted. Her son-in-law speculated that her longevity may be attributable to her working as hard as she could in the fields and not being picky when it came to food.

Sumi Fujiki passed away in Ono City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, on 27 August 2004, at the age of 111 years, 352 days.

RECOGNITION

In 2001, at the age of 108, Fujiki was visited by the city mayor and received presents at her home in celebration of Respect for the Aged Day. She was the fourth-oldest person in Hyōgo Prefecture at that time.

On 31 May 2003, following the death of 112-year-old Tadanosuke Hashimoto, she became the oldest living person in Hyōgo Prefecture.

On 21 May 2004, at the age of 111 years, 254 days, she surpassed the final age of Tsuru Misawa (1891–2002), becoming the oldest woman to ever live in Hyōgo Prefecture. At the time of passing, she was the second-oldest person to have ever lived in the Prefecture, second only to Hashimoto.

Upon her passing, she was succeeded as the Prefecture’s oldest living person by Yoshino Ide, who would go on to surpass her final age on 20 December 2007, becoming the new oldest woman ever from Hyōgo Prefecture.
