Kahl was born in Breddin (or in Prignitz, according to some sources), Brandenburg, Germany, on 29 April 1915, the daughter of a veterinarian. She later studied textile design at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. However, due to World War II and the subsequent years of reconstruction in East Germany, she was unable to pursue a professional career.
After fleeing East Germany in 1956 and settling in Frankfurt am Main—losing all her belongings in the process—her primary focus became raising and educating her three children. Her husband, architect Albert Kahl, supported the family as a regional specialist in rural construction. She was widowed in 1991. They shared hobbies such as painting, drawing, and traveling in their camper van.
Her age has not been validated.
