BIOGRAPHY
Silvia Angélica Sánchez Martínez was born in Calamuchita, Córdoba, Argentina, on 31 July 1916. She was the sixth of eleven. Her mother was María del Rosario Martínez, who taught her to be altruistic: she always helped those most in need, to keep her door open, and to share a meal, a warm coat, or a place to sleep. “My mother was a saint,” she would always say, and she would pray to her for the most difficult miracles. Two of her sisters were nuns.
Silvia Angélica married Dr. José Luis Cuezzo in 1947, a physician from Tucumán. Together, they settled in the province, where they raised their two daughters: Silvia and Susana. They never stopped visiting her siblings and nieces and nephews, nor her beloved Córdoba. Although she was a teacher by profession, she devoted herself to homemaking and cooking; she painted, knitted, sewed, and embroidered—she always kept herself busy.
Throughout her life, she remained deeply devoted to the Catholic faith, with a special reverence for the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Expeditus. She continues to live each day with tranquility and acceptance. She was a very balanced person throughout her life—always serene. She maintained composure in her emotions, her diet, and her life in general, which her family said this was most likely the secret to her longevity. “How are you, Alita?” “—Just keeping on,” she would always answer with a smile. She never complained, never got angry, and never gave up.
Moving steadily through life—cherishing the brief moments of visits, fibbing about her age whenever she could, and never losing her desire to be coquettish—she turned 110 and became a supercentenarian.
After a lifetime of great devotion, she is cared for by her daughter and son-in-law in Tafí Viejo, Tucumán Province, Argentina. She is also supported by six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and the many doctors, nurses, and caregivers who help her stay well day by day.
