BIOGRAPHY

Chiurato was born in Grumolo delle Abbadesse, Veneto, Italy on 4 February 1913. She had five brothers, all of whom died at early ages. Her two sisters emigrated to the United States. The nearby hamlet of Lerino later became her lifelong place of residence.

Chiurato married Antonio Urbani in 1934 and had five children. Her two sons, Lucio and Paolo, were still alive as of their mother’s 110th birthday. She can recall vividly the bombings of her local area during World War II.

In December 2020, aged 107, Chiurato contracted COVID-19 and experienced a 40°C fever. She recovered, but later caught the virus again at 109 years old, making her one of the oldest people to have recovered twice from COVID-19. As of her 110th birthday, she enjoyed music, particularly the church choir, and a varied diet. She became the oldest living person in Veneto upon the death of 111-year-old Angelina Marcon on 21 January 2023.

Chiurato died on 18 March 2023 at the age of 110 years, 42 days, after suffering a fall a few days prior. Her successor as Veneto’s oldest resident was 108-year-old Rita Vantini.

RECOGNITION

Chiurato recovered from COVID-19 in January 2021, and received sizeable amounts of news coverage as one of the oldest survivors. Her birthdays since then were reported consistently, and celebrations attended by town dignitaries.

Chiurato became popular on a TikTok account run by her granddaughter Silvia, and she received many messages of congratulations on her 110th birthday, including from the Veneto president and the mayor of Torri di Quartesolo.
