Sergei Kulish was born in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine (then Russian Empire) on 31 March 1906. At some point, he married Nadezhda Stefanovna (born 1919).
He immigrated to the United States in 1952, settling in New York City. In 1966, he moved to Brookhaven, where he lived for many decades. A mechanical engineer by profession, he worked at several companies before retiring full-time in his fifties—though he continued part-time work for many years afterward.
Even at the age of 105, he remained active in his church, the Greek Orthodox Church of Philadelphia. When asked about the secret to his longevity, he admitted he wasn’t entirely sure, but believed that his three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II had made him more resilient. While he acknowledged being physically weaker with age, he said his mind remained sharp.
Sergei Kulish passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, on 29 January 2017, at the age of 110 years, 304 days.
His age was verified by an anonymous researcher and Stefan Maglov, and validated by LongeviQuest on 8 May 2025.
