Reva Starrett was born in Darke County, Ohio, USA, on 11 February 1915, as the eldest of six children. Her parents were Russell Rhoades and Mabel Dennison. Her siblings were Helen Olwine, Ferne Hancock, Leon Rhoades, Lowell Rhoades, and Phyllis Hardy. One of her sisters lived to be 100, and another to 93.
She was raised on the family farm on Ellis Road, where she began milking cows at just five years old. In 1933, she graduated from Jackson Township High School, which is now known as Mississinawa Valley High School. She later became the head cook at an elementary school in the Bellbrook school system, where she was especially known for baking fresh rolls and bread.
Her husband, Bill, a World War II veteran, passed away in 1998. They had one son, Bill Jr. During the war, Reva lived and worked with her sister while Bill served overseas.
