Renée Rousselot was born in the commune of Boucq in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in northeastern France, on 27 May 1904. She was just 10 years old in 1914 when she encountered part of the French army stationed in her hometown, where she lived with her parents, who were farmers. At the time, her family was hosting a renowned tenor and a well-known lyricist, who composed songs especially for her to learn. Passionate about singing and music, Renée—then living in Labry—continued to play the synthesizer and sing at every opportunity.
In 1916, she had the privilege of performing alongside Sarah Bernhardt at Boucq Castle for the Théâtre aux Armées, in front of dozens of soldiers. After the performance, Bernhardt wished to take young Renée with her to Paris, but her parents declined.
In 1927, Renée married Louis Rousselot (1904–1963), and together they had three children, born in 1930, 1936, and 1946. Tragedy struck in 1940 during the Phoney War, when a French military truck accidentally struck one of her children, who later died from injuries.
She chose to move into the Labry nursing home at the age of 100.
Renée Rousselot passed away in Labry, on 26 March 2015, at the age of 110 years, 303 days.
Rousselot’s age was verified by Antoine Demarais (Les Grands Centenaires Français) and validated by the ESO on 11 March 2020.
