Rafael Méndez Durán

BIOGRAPHY

Méndez Durán was born in San Ramón, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica, on 9 July 1912. At a young age, he moved to the community of San Juan de Dios in Barú District, San José Province, where he spent most of his life.

At some point, he got married and went on to have 22 children (eight living as of 2019). He was a participant of the Costa Rican Civil War in 1948.

Méndez Durán passed away in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on 28 May 2022, at the age of 109 years, 323 days.

RECOGNITION

His age was verified by Stefan Maglov and James Roberts, and listed as a pending validation by the LAS as of 12 December 2022.
