BIOGRAPHY
Ophelia Alligood was born in Colquitt County, Georgia, USA, on 29 May 1915. She was the 13th child of Samuel Davis Stanaland and Annie Lenora Ward. She grew up and spent nearly her entire life on Lower Meigs Road. On 31 December 1936, she married J.D. Alligood (1912–2001), and together they had three children: a daughter, Carolyn Peace, and two sons, Stanaland L. and Ronnie.
She became a devoted member of New Bethel Baptist Church in 1939 and remained active in the congregation for many years. She later retired from her position as a kitchen helper at Hamilton Elementary School. A passionate gardener, she continued tending to her garden until the age of 97, generously sharing its fruits and vegetables with friends and family.
