BIOGRAPHY

Nellie McEachran was born in Mackay, Queensland, Australia, on 5 November 1916. She grew up on a sugar cane farm in Rosella, south of Mackay, where her father cultivated sugar cane. As the eldest child, she often stayed home to help her mother manage the household.

She married Archibald Stewart McEachran at the Presbyterian Church in Mackay on 6 June 1942. Archie was serving in the army at the time. Nellie later witnessed bombs falling near Townsville. The couple moved to Gladstone in 1954 and purchased a house on Auckland Street in 1958. Nellie devoted herself to homemaking and raising their three children.

She had been involved with the Rotary Club of Gladstone, Queensland, since the 1960s. At the age of 109, she was recognised for her contributions to Rotary by being awarded a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF). Her husband was also a member of the club from 1960 until his passing in 2017.

In 2016, shortly before her 100th birthday, Nellie was honoured at Tondoon Botanic Gardens with a tree planting and plaque dedication ceremony on 4 November. On her 100th birthday, she also celebrated with a party attended by family and friends.
