Mitsue Nagasaki was born in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan on 18 September 1899.

She moved to Kure during the Taisho era.

In her 90s, Nagasaki was taking a walk every day. At the age of 98, she was able to go to Kumamoto City alone. Around 2006, her legs began to become weak.

Following the death of 112-year-old Hiro Nakae on 19 August 2011, Nagasaki became the oldest living person in Hiroshima Prefecture.

In September 2012, shortly before her 113th birthday, Nagasaki was visited by Kazutoshi Komura, the mayor of Kure. At the time, she was living with her son. She hadn’t any illness, and wasn’t taking any medication.

Mitsue Nagasaki died of senility in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on 17 June 2013, at the age of 113 years, 272 days. She was the last surviving Japanese person born in 1899.

RECOGNITION

Nagasaki’s age was verified by Tom Li and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), and was validated by the GRG on 17 September 2011.

Following the death of 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura on 12 June 2013, Nagasaki became the second-oldest living person in Japan, after Misao Okawa.
