Mika Sugiyama was born in Japan on 25 June 1909.
On 15 June 2017, ten days before her 108th birthday, a birthday party was held at the nursing home in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, where she resided. She received a portrait as a gift from her great-grandson, who shared the same birthday as her, 100 years apart.
Sugiyama passed away in Shizuoka City due to old age on 6 December 2019, at the age of 110 years, 164 days.
In February 2016, at the age of 107, she became the oldest living person in Shizuoka City.
At the time of her death, she was the fifth-oldest living person in Shizuoka Prefecture, following Hatsue Tachikawa, Kahoru Furuya, Sue Masuda, and Sakae Shimizu.
Following her passing, Takejirō Takayama succeeded her as the oldest living person in Shizuoka City.
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li, Ryohei Asano, and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 30 June 2024.
