Mary Morrissey was born in Emyvale, Prince Edward Island, Canada, on 4 December 1904. Mary began her teaching career in one-room schools, first in Fort Augustus and later in Emyvale. Eventually, she purchased and managed The Economy Grocery Store, located at the corner of Kent Street and Hillsborough Street.
She married Walter Morrissey, who worked in car sales, while Mary continued to run the store. Mary was nearly 45 when she and Walter welcomed their only child, Leonard. Tragically, Walter died in a car accident in 1964. Mary never remarried but remained dedicated to her work. She worked as a receptionist at the Dundee Arms Inn well into her early nineties.
Mary lived independently in her Charlottetown apartment until she was 95, after which she moved to an assisted living facility. Despite this, she maintained much of her independence, regularly getting around town on her own. Mary had a lifelong passion for bridge and a deep devotion to her faith.
Mary Morrissey passed away in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 8 April 2015, at the age of 110 years, 125 days.
