Mary ‘Molly’ McTegart is a British supercentenarian.
Mary McTegart was born in the suburb of Everton in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, on 4 January 1916. She attended Everton Valley School from the age of five and remained there until receiving her school certificate at 16. She later recalled singing in a choir at the laying of the foundation stone for the proposed Lutyens Cathedral in June 1933, as well as walking through the Queensway Tunnel before its official opening in 1934.
After training at her aunt’s clothing shop in Birkenhead, she briefly worked as a “Vernons girl” for the famous Bootle-based football pools company, Vernons. In 1939, she opened her own dress shop on Duke Street in St Helens, which she successfully ran until 1953. When the Second World War broke out, her three brothers were called up, while she remained in Liverpool to care for her mother. During this time, she served on fire watch duty in Duke Street and undertook canteen work in Liverpool city centre.
After the war, Molly married Charles McTegart at St Monica’s Church in Bootle. Together they had five children: Mary, Ann, Charles Jr, Peter, and Jane. In the early 1970s, Molly returned to the fashion trade, opening Strand Fashions in Bootle. In the mid-1970s, Molly moved to Blundellsands.
Her age has not been validated.
