BIOGRAPHY

Hutton was born in Cuba, Illinois, USA, on 11 March 1911, as one of eight children to parents Henry Hutton (1860–1951) and Flora Yelton (1871–1954). After high school, she joined the Dominican Congregation in 1932, making her first profession in 1933 and her final vows in 1936. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Math and Spanish from Nazareth College and furthered her studies in Physics and Radiobiology.

Hutton’s teaching career began in 1933 in Indiana and spanned over five decades, taking her to Kentucky, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. She was known for her strict yet respected teaching style, particularly in physics. After retiring from education in 1985, she joined the Congregation’s Finance team, where she was known for her meticulousness and sense of humor.

In 1999, she retired from active ministry but continued to volunteer at the Recycling Center at St. Catharine’s Dominican Earth Center. In 2001, she moved to Sansbury Care Center.

Mary Magdalen Hutton passed away in St. Catharine, Kentucky, USA, on 16 December 2022 at the age of 111 years, 280 days.
