Marthe Linteau was born in the commune of Pantin, Île-de-France, France, on 15 October 1906. She had two sisters. Marthe, an embroiderer and lady-in-waiting in Paris, married a chauffeur-mechanic in August 1937, though the marriage later ended in divorce. From this union, a daughter, Nadia, was born in Toulon; she passed away at the age of 59.
Immediately after World War II, she returned with her parents to her grandparents’ village, La Chapelle-Moulière, where she spent most of her life. Her father managed the Hôtel de France in Bonneuil-Matours, while her mother, Antonia, worked as a hairdresser. She passed away just four months shy of her 100th birthday.
According to her son-in-law, she broke her femur twice after turning 100—both times while attempting to pull weeds. At the age of 110, she had four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. At the time, she still enjoyed eating oysters and drank half a glass of red wine at both lunch and dinner.
Marthe Linteau passed away in La Chapelle-Moulière, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, on 16 October 2017, the day after her 111th birthday.
Linteau’s age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).
