BIOGRAPHY
Martha McAnespie was born in Illinois, USA, on 14 October 1916.
In September 2011, Schnuck Markets Inc. sold nine of its supermarkets in the Memphis area, along with their associated fuel and convenience centers, to The Kroger Co., while closing its remaining local stores. The closures resulted in many employees losing their jobs, including 94-year-old McAnespie, who had worked at the same store for 26 years. Commenting on the situation for Action News 5 at the time, she said: “I wasn’t ready to leave just yet, I’ve been thinking about retiring, but every time… I change my mind and I wasn’t going to retire in 30 days that’s for sure.”
Her many hobbies included reading, playing bridge, and regularly meeting friends for lunch. A devoted sports enthusiast, she was a loyal supporter of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Memphis. Martha’s faith was always the foundation of her life. A devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, she remained deeply involved in parish life and charitable endeavors throughout her life. In recognition of her dedication and spiritual leadership, she was inducted into the Memphis Catholic Hall of Fame in 2024.
