Mabee was born in Arcadia Township, Michigan, on 3 November 1906 as one of eight children born to John and Jennie (Haskill) Roney. At the age of 15, on 9 October 1922, she married Carl Mabee in Detroit. The couple had two daughters, Onalee and Normalee.
Mabee was widowed in 1987. She outlived all of her siblings, her daughters, and one great-granddaughter. She was a lifelong member of Lapeer’s Trinity United Methodist Church. She relished meals with her family, and enjoyed reading and sewing.
