Marie Elisabeth Børsting Jensen (née Nielsson) was a Danish supercentenarian. Her age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).

BIOGRAPHY

Marie Jensen was born in Øster Grønning, Midtjylland (Central Denmark Region), Denmark, on 5 June 1904. She was the second-oldest of six siblings. She began working as a young girl, as her family had little money. Still, her father managed to buy two horses for plowing the fields, and over time they built up a herd of 14 cows. On some days, the children had to stay home from school to help their father with the work. Her mother sewed all her clothes. With only one adult man in the household, everyone was expected to contribute.

In 1925, she moved to a farm in Sevel Skovby, where she would live for the rest of her life. In 1927, she married Christen E. Jensen, and in 1931 they welcomed their first and only child, Kristian. Like his father, Kristian became a farmer. When he married, his wife moved in with them. She was widowed in 1965 when Christen died at the age of 75.

Longevity ran in her family: two of her aunts lived past the age of 105, and her sister Dagny was 97 in 2014.

In the 2000s, her son Kristian passed away, and she continued living with her daughter-in-law, Grethe. By 2014, at the age of 109, reports noted that while Grethe took care of the household chores, Marie spent her days knitting and reading newspapers. Until a year earlier, she could still walk around the house using a walker, but in April 2013 doctors amputated one of her legs above the knee due to poor circulation, and she began using a wheelchair. She had at least one grandchild, Arne Jensen.

Marie Jensen passed away in Vinderup, on 30 January 2015, at the age of 110 years, 239 days.

RECOGNITION

On 1 March 2014, following the passing of Agnes From Steenstrup, she became the oldest living person in Denmark. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Signe Højer.

Jensen’s age was verified by Jimmy Lindberg, and was validated by the ESO on 26 February 2020.
