BIOGRAPHY

Maria Ubach Massana was born in Manresa, Catalonia, Spain, on 15 March 1909. At some point, she married Joan Massana Font and had a daughter, Maria Glòria, in 1929. Together, the three of them ran the Massana pastry shop in Manresa, an establishment that remained open until the 1970s, when they sold the premises to a bank.

In November 2014, at 105, she arrived at the Ibada Nursing Home in Castellgalí. In January of the following year, her daughter, Maria Glòria Massana, who had spent three months in the hospital with a leg in a cast, joined her. They had both left the flat in Manresa where they had lived all their lives. At the age of 108, she resided in the psychogeriatric unit, while Maria Glòria lived in the main nursing home. Despite being 108, she still read occasionally, though she could no longer see the small print. She had limited mobility and could no longer walk, but when she first arrived at the nursing home, she did so with great energy—at one point, even scrubbing the windows of the unit. She experienced moments of sharp lucidity interspersed with lapses in her memory.

Maria Ubach Massana passed away in Castellgalí, Catalonia, on 30 June 2019, at the age of 110 years, 107 days.
