Maria Teresa Fossati was born in Ovada, Piedmont, Italy, on 9 September 1905. She worked as a seamstress and also rented out rooms to students. She never married and had no children. Although she once had a boyfriend, their relationship eventually ended. She outlived her only brother.
On her 110th birthday, it was noted that she did not take any medication.
