Maria Saldi was born in the village of Cipolleto in Gubbio, Umbria, Italy, on 28 September 1910. In her youth, she worked in the fields and later became known for her skills as a gardener, a profession she continued throughout her life. In 1934, she married Ubaldo Marcheggiani, and together they had two daughters.
At the age of 110, she still lived in her own home. By that time, she had four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Maria Saldi passed away in Gubbio, Umbria, Italy, on 11 December 2020, at the age of 110 years, 74 days.
Following the passing of 108-year-old Gina Checcaglini (14 July 1910 – 2 May 2019), she became the oldest living person in the region of Umbria.
On 21 November 2020, at the age of 110 years, 54 days, she surpassed the final age of Clelia Campolongo (1906–2016), becoming the oldest woman to have ever lived in Umbria. She held the record until 21 October 2022, when Augusta Giontella surpassed her final age.
At the time of her passing, she was the second-oldest person to have ever lived in the region, after Dante Parlani.
