BIOGRAPHY

Maria Echeandia Cumpiano was born in Rincón, Puerto Rico, on 11 September 1887. Her parents were José Teodoro Echeandía Arteaga (1846–1907) and Julita Ramona Cumpiano Ceballos (1845–1928). On her father’s side, she was of Spanish descent, with her paternal grandparents born in Venezuela before relocating to Puerto Rico. On her mother’s side, she had both Spanish and Italian ancestry.

On 25 October 1917, at the age of 30, she married José Benito Trigo Sobrino (1885–1956) in Camuy. Her husband was an immigrant from La Guardia, Galicia, Spain. The couple had at least four children: Jose Benito, Julio Enrique, Maria Luisa, and Ana Mercedes.

Maria Echeandia Cumpiano died in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on 25 December 1997, at the age of 110 years, 105 days.
