Margarethe Petermeier was born in Kowary (then Schmiedeberg), Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, on 24 September 1910. In her youth, she worked on her family’s farm. At the age of 20, she took a job on a ship in northern Germany in the fish kitchen. She married her first husband, who was sent to the front during World War II and never returned. Later, she earned a living by sewing ties and tablecloths. In 1941, she moved to Krefeld.
At the age of 50, she met her second husband, a truck driver, and enjoyed a happy marriage until his death in 1976. She had no children. She was riding a bike until she was 70 years old. She lived in Krefeld, Germany, for nearly 80 years. In her free time, she particularly enjoyed cooking and gardening. Even after moving into a retirement home, she remained mentally sharp and content with the care she received.
Petermeier celebrated her 110th birthday with visits from her former neighbor, a nephew, and Krefeld’s Lord Mayor, Frank Meyer, who personally congratulated her on behalf of the city.
Margarethe Petermeier passed away in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on 2 December 2020, at the age of 110 years, 69 days.
