Margaret Smart was born in Willacoochee, Georgia, USA, on 26 November 1909, to parents Fortune Brown and Lola Lee McIntyre. She had two older siblings: John C. Brown (1905) and Genevia Brown (1907). She received her education in the Atkinson County School District.
At some point, she married Isiah Smart (1915–1944). The couple had at least two daughters: Rita T. Godwin and Nilyeah Godwin. She adopted three children: Marshall Rainge, Teresa Johnson, and Bettye Everett. Her husband, a Private First Class, lost his life during World War II when the ship he was on was torpedoed by German forces in the Mediterranean Sea near its junction with the Black Sea. His name is now honored on the Waycross Veterans Memorial wall.
On 23 November 2013, she was honored with a proclamation from the City of Waycross, designating the day as “Margaret Brown Smart Day.”
Margaret Smart passed away in Waycross, Georgia, on 4 May 2020, at the age of 110 years, 160 days.
