BIOGRAPHY

Madeleine Chat was born in Auxerre in the Yonne department, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France, on 10 August 1907, to parents Paul Louis Chat (1871–1950) and Louise Marie Roy (1877–1971). She had at least two brothers: Jean Pierre Chat (1904–1997) and René Louis Chat (1913–1947).

She was a high school student in Auxerre, then studied in Dijon before working as a study supervisor in Nancy and later in Paris. Upon retiring in 1972, Madeleine returned to Auxerre. She never married and had no children.

Madeleine Chat passed away in Auxerre, on 14 December 2020, at the age of 113 years, 126 days.

RECOGNITION

On 31 August 2017, three weeks after her 110th birthday, Chat became the oldest known living person in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté following the passing of fellow 110-year-old Yvonne Bouton. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Madeleine Thomas.

Chat’s age was verified by Antoine Demarais, Cyril Depoudent, and Luc Le Lay, and was validated by the ESO on 4 April 2020.
