BIOGRAPHY

Louise Begley was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA on 8 April 1866, to her Irish-born father John Begley and Scottish-born mother Margaret Begley. Her parents met and married in Scotland before they arrived in the United States in the 1860s.

Begley worked as a cook and housekeeper for the S.E. Nettleton family in Syracuse for around 45 years, before retiring in 1947 at the age of 81. At the time of her 105th birthday, she mainly attributed her longevity to having worked hard for her entire life. She never married or had children, but nonetheless had a large extended family in her later years, consisting of a cousin, Ethel Bidwell (aged 80 in 1977), as well as many nieces and nephews. At her nursing home, she was known by other residents as “Grandma Begley”, due to her age.

Louise Begley died in Syracuse, New York, USA on 16 April 1977, just 8 days after celebrating her 111th birthday.
