BIOGRAPHY

Leny Mackenbach was born in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands on 29 December 1912 as the eldest of five siblings. She experienced profound loss early in life, as her brothers Jan and John died young, likely due to hemophilia—a condition that affected their family significantly. This genetic disorder not only shaped their lives but also influenced Leny and her sister Diny’s decision never to marry, fearing they might pass on the disease.

Mackenbach dedicated her life to education, teaching at Gerardus Majella School in Rotterdam-Schiebroek, where she earned a reputation as a strict yet beloved teacher. Even after her retirement, former students continued to seek her out, demonstrating her lasting impact on their lives. She lived a quiet, reserved life, deeply religious and dedicated to her sister, Diny.

While Mackenbach focused on her teaching, Diny worked as an executive secretary in The Hague, managing the household and caring for Mackenbach, who often remained in bed. The sisters shared a deep bond, living together for most of their lives after their father’s death.

Following Diny’s death at 99 in 2018, she became increasingly dependent on family and caregivers. She spent her final years in a Humanitas apartment in Schiebroek, Rotterdam, where she was surrounded by the care of her cousins and staff. Despite her declining health, Mackenbach retained a fondness for chocolate and sweets, enjoying visits from friends, family, and former students, who sent her postcards on her 110th birthday.

Leny Mackenbach passed away in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands on 3 December 2023 at the age of 110 years, 339 days from pneumonia just 26 days before her 111th birthday.
