BIOGRAPHY

Kotarō Akamine was born in Haebaru Village, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on 15 February 1911. While farming, he served one term as a member of the Haebaru Village assembly in 1950. His hobby was gate ball, and he reportedly still participated in it at the age of 102.

At the age of 97, he was interviewed by the Ryukyu Asahi Broadcasting System and said that the secret to his longevity was to constantly move his body, not be picky about food, and go to bed early and get up early. He and his wife, Kiyo, worked as storytellers for many years, passing down the facts and historical lessons of the Battle of Okinawa to the next generation. In 2020, 75 years after the end of World War II, they were awarded a letter of appreciation from the prefecture for their contributions as war storytellers.

In August 2013, when he received an award for his activities from the Haebaru Town Elderly Club Association, he said that the secret to his health was to be calm and not worry too much.

Akamine passed away of natural causes at a hospital in Yaese Town, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on 20 February 2021, at the age of 110 years, 5 days.
