Kiyoshi Azumaya was born in Japan on 27 February 1914.
In September 2023, the mayor of Otaru visited his home and delivered a congratulatory letter from the Governor of Hokkaido. At that time, even at the age of 109, he was able to stand on his own without the need for assistive devices such as a cane or handrail to receive the congratulatory letter. He also had good hearing and did not need a hearing aid. Although he said there was no particular secret to his longevity, his family mentioned that he made an effort to exercise regularly. On 27 February 2024, he celebrated his 110th birthday at an elderly care home in Otaru City.
Azumaya passed away in Otaru, Hokkaido Prefecture, on 11 June 2024, at the age of 110 years, 105 days.
Following the passing of 109-year-old Sadasuke Fujita (27 August 1913 – 16 October 2022) of Hamatombetsu, he became the oldest (known) living man in Hokkaido Prefecture.
His age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ryohei Asano and Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 16 July 2024.
