BIOGRAPHY

Kitsu Kobashi (小橋きつ) was born on October 10, 1904, in Yamamoto Town, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

As a child, she moved to Soma, where she worked as a midwife, helping to deliver many babies throughout her career. She entered a nursing home in 2001. When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11, 2011, she was 106 years old. Following the disaster, she spent about six months living as an evacuee in Yamagata Prefecture.

In October 2014, Kobashi celebrated her 110th birthday at a nursing home in Minamisoma. According to the Minamisoma City Newsletter, her favorite foods and drinks at the time were amazake and Yakult. She loved telling jokes and making people laugh, and reportedly said that the secret to her longevity was “eating everything without being picky.”

Following the death of Sute Sato on May 29, 2015, Kobashi became the oldest living person in Fukushima Prefecture.

Kitsu Kobashi was last confirmed alive in August 2015, at the age of 110, in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.
