Joaquim Varela was born in Ourique, Beja District, Portugal, on 13 May 1915. His parents were Amadeu Guerreiro and Maria Antónia. He started working at the age of 7, herding animals, and later dedicated himself to farming and livestock raising.
In August 1940, he married Augusta Parreira (1915–1993). The couple had six children (four daughters and two sons). He began living in São Brás de Alportel with his daughter and son-in-law after becoming widowed.
At the age of 105, he had nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Following the passing of Manuel Ferreira (31 October 1913 – 21 September 2022) of Lisbon District, he became the oldest known living man in Portugal.
His age has not been validated.
