BIOGRAPHY
Jean-Clémentis Amano was born in Saint-Joseph, Réunion, on 7 October 1908, to parents Jean Amano (born 1877) and Véronique Tisaria (born 1877).
He first married in 1936, but sadly, his wife passed away just a few months later. In 1940, he remarried, this time to Marie Scholastique Éthève (1916–2013). He had 13 children in total. He spent most of his life in Saint-Joseph, working as a farmer. He remained active, tending to the land until the age of 103.
Even as a supercentenarian, it was reported that he continued to walk with the aid of a stick. It was reported that he continued to live in his hut in the Lianes district. His relatives visited daily to provide support, along with a housekeeper who came twice a week. Despite suffering a stroke over a year before his passing, he had nearly made a full recovery. He was nicknamed “Coffin.”
Jean-Clémentis Amano passed away in Saint-Joseph, Réunion, on 15 June 2019, at the age of 110 years, 251 days. At the time of his passing, he had 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
RECOGNITION
On 19 January 2018, following the passing of 109-year-old Marcelle Antoinette Grondin, he became the oldest (known) living person in Réunion, at the age of 109 years, 104 days. He held the title until his own passing in June 2019, when he was succeeded by Eliane Hoareau (24 August 1910 – 22 January 2020).
On 18 July 2018, at the age of 109 years, 284 days, he surpassed the final age of Theophane Rifosta (6 September 1889 – 16 June 1999), becoming the oldest known man ever from Réunion.
In October 2018, Amano became the first male in the history of Réunion to attain supercentenarian status.
