BIOGRAPHY

Irene Burrus was born in Richmond, Kentucky, USA, on 5 April 1915. She had five siblings—two brothers and three sisters. Longevity ran in her family—each of her sisters lived into their mid to late 90s—though her mother passed away at the age of 49 due to complications from diabetes.

She attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in Richmond, which is now known as Eastern Kentucky University. Shortly after completing her studies, she moved to Washington, D.C., along with her sister Ruby Burrus. Both began careers with the federal government. Though Irene and Ruby maintained separate residences, they remained extremely close until Ruby’s passing.

Irene never married or had children. She lived independently in the same apartment in Alexandria, Virginia, for over 50 years. She never owned a car, relying instead on public transportation, and took care of herself well into her centenarian years. She enjoyed staying active and traveled frequently in her younger years.

Even in her centenarian years, Irene remained a voracious reader with a sharp interest in current events and politics.
