BIOGRAPHY

Hilda Brown was born in Musgravetown, Newfoundland, Canada, on 20 January 1911, as the last of ten children. She lost her mother at the age of eight. As a young girl, she often walked around the bay picking mussels. After her mother passed away, life became difficult for her family, and she had many chores from a young age. Her grandmother helped raise the siblings during this challenging time. She played the organ in her hometown church growing up.

As a teenager, on a May evening in 1927, she witnessed Charles Lindbergh‘s Spirit of St. Louis flying over Musgravetown. Much of her life was dedicated to service, including crocheting items for those in need and traveling as a church missionary. In her 30s, she moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey, where she worked as a waitress for four decades before retiring to Bayville.

Remarkably independent in her later years, she drove until she was 93 and continued walking until she was 103. Even in her 90s, she remained dedicated to serving others, taking a part-time job at Bayville Manor Nursing Home.

In November 2020, at the age of 109, she contracted COVID-19 but made a full recovery. Her 110th birthday was marked by a bouquet of 110 roses sent by her nephew Jim and a special visit from her great-great-niece Julianne.

Hilda Brown passed away at Tallwoods Care Center in Bayville, New Jersey, United States, on 22 June 2021, at the age of 110 years, 153 days.
