Taylor was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA, on 28 September 1907, as the fifth of twelve children born to parents Harry Wadsworth Taylor (1870–1963) and Stella Pearl Ambler (1880–1949). In 1910, the family moved to South Bend.
In 1928, he married Helen Emma Ollmann (1909–1978), and had two children with her: Eugene Taylor and Janice Jones. His son Eugene died aged three months in 1934 from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). He worked in the Circulation Department for the South Bend Tribune, retiring in 1969.
In 1983, he married Mildred Roberts, who had already been married twice and had two children. They were married for seven years until Mildred’s death in 1990, at the age of 86.
Taylor passed away in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, on 15 April 2018, at the age of 110 years, 199 days. He was survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
On 17 February 2018, following the death of 110-year-old Herbert Engel, he became the oldest known living man in the U.S. state of Michigan.
