Anna Maria Helene Axt was a German supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in Hesse at the time of her passing.
Helene Axt was born in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany, on 19 April 1912. Her father was a Protestant pastor and senior teacher. After studying pharmacy, she opened Sonnen-Apotheke in Darmstadt in the mid-1940s. She managed the pharmacy independently, along with her staff, for nearly five decades. She lived through the bombing raid on Darmstadt during World War II, which completely destroyed her building. She had left just minutes before the house was demolished. Her brother, Fritz, was killed in the war. She never married nor had children.
Axt celebrated her 109th birthday at the Kursana Domizil nursing home in Griesheim. She raised a glass of champagne with friends and acquaintances over lunch, expressing her gratitude for her long life. She attributed her longevity to healthy eating, regular exercise, maintaining social connections, and “not overdoing anything. The balance has to be right.” Even at the age of 110, she still loved to sing, including as part of the nursing home’s choir. Her passion for music began in a children’s choir, where she discovered a love for both folk and modern songs. Later, she joined the church choir Paulusgemeinde in Darmstadt and also sang with the choir of the State Theater. At 110, she used a wheelchair, and despite her hearing loss and visual impairment, she actively participated in the nursing home’s diverse activity program.
Axt passed away in Griesheim, Hesse, Germany, on 8 November 2022, at the age of 110 years, 203 days.
Following the passing of Rosa Heimerl (15 March 1912 – 12 February 2022), she became the oldest (known) living person in the State of Hesse, at the age of 109 years, 299 days. Upon her own passing, she was likely succeeded by Maria Daub.
Her age was verified by Georg Fürholzer, and validated by LongeviQuest on 7 March 2025.
