Eleni “Helen” Stamelos was a Greek-born Australian supercentenarian.
Helen Stamelos was born in Kymi, Euboea, Central Greece, on 30 November 1906. She was the tenth of eleven children, with five brothers and five sisters.
At some point, she married Dimitris. To support her family, she earned money by stitching and mending clothes, while Dimitris was well known for his shoemaking business. A year after their wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Maria. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, they had a son, George. Later, they had two more sons, Antoni and Yiannis, who was nicknamed John.
During the German occupation in World War II, she assisted her husband in hiding Italian soldiers. In 1968, the couple migrated to Australia and settled in Perth, where they worked in the hospitality industry, establishing fish and chip shops.
Helen Stamelos passed away in Perth on 7 August 2017, at the age of 110 years, 250 days. At the time of her passing, she was survived by 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
